ONGC today felicitated its medal winners and other players who brought glory to the nation and the organization during the recently held Commonwealth Games. ONGC had a rich representation of 20 sportspersons to the Indian contingent that participated in the games.
Seven ONGCians clinched six medals at the Commonwealth Games 2014 at Glasgow, Scotland with a tally of one Gold, three Silver and two Bronze. ONGC CMD D K Sarraf along with his colleagues on board felicitated the players at New Delhi today.
A cash incentive of Rs 5 lakh was given to wrestler Amit Kumar who won Gold medal in men’s 57kg category at Glasgow. Cash incentive of Rs 2.25 Lakh each was given to Ashwini Ponnappa, who bagged Silver medal in women’s doubles and Anthony Amalraj, who brought Silver in men’s Table Tennis doubles. Hockey stars Gurvinder Singh Chandi and Akashdeep Singh were given cash incentives of Rs 1.5 Lakh each for the Silver Medal they fetched for India. Pawan Kumar received Rs 2 Lakh for winning Bronze in wrestling (86kg category) and Arpinder Singh received Rs 2 Lakh for his Bronze medal in Triple jump.
ONGC also felicitated other ONGCians who represented India but missed the podium by narrow margins. A cash incentive of Rs 50,000 was given to P C Thulasi, Pranaav Jerry Chopra (Badminton), Shiva Thapa, Sumit Sangwan (Boxing), Heena Sidhu, Varsha Varman (Shooting), Madhurika Patkar (Table Tennis), Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu (Squash), Siddhant Thingalaya (110m hurdles), Poovamma Raju Machettira (400 m), Mayookha Johny (Long Jump/Triple Jump), Om Prakash Singh Karhana (Shot put) and Kamalpreet Singh (Hammer Throw).
Mr Sarraf congratulated the players for winning many laurels for India and reaffirmed ONGC’s commitment towards sports and sportspersons. “ONGC realizes the backing needed by sports persons, especially for those games that other companies do no support because of the lack of glamour. We firmly believe in promoting all kind of sports and are sure that our efforts would culminate in these games getting more recognition”, he said.

Director HR D D Misra complemented the ONGC contingent saying that they have brought laurels to both the country as well as the company. He said that the management would stand shoulder to shoulder with the sportspersons and be there for them as pillars of support. He also conveyed the best wishes from Addl Secy, MoPNG Mr Rajiv Kumar whom he met recently.
Ashwini Ponnappa thanked the management for the support and encouragement it provided to sports and the supportive policies that let the sportspersons concentrate on their game. Amit Kumar said that the amount of support provided to games like wrestling is something no other company does, and there was great encouragement for the players to perform.
ONGC is committed towards promoting sports and sponsors International and National events while supporting financially weak sportspersons. Building of infrastructure, training in the country and abroad, providing necessary kits and instruments and endowing scholarship support and sponsorship to the young and upcoming talented sportspersons are an integral part of ONGC's sports credo.
