Prime Minister Narendra Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi wears the traditional dress presented to him by ONGC CMD D K Sarraf Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi hailed the ONGC Tripura Power Plant for putting Tripura, and hence India, on the world Clean Energy map. The Prime Minister said this while dedicating the Unit II of the ONGC Tripura Power Company at Palatana, Tripura, to the Nation on December 1, 2014. The 726.6 MW gas-based power plant of ONGC Tripura Power Company is one of the biggest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects of the world.

"The third revolution – the Saffon revolution is needed now, which is the energy revolution, as saffron is the color of energy." The Prime Minister even referred to the blue chakra as the need to develop the enormous water resources of the north-east including the resources of the Brahmaputra river. "It's my privilege to be here when this power project is being dedicated to the People of India. Energy is needed for development. We are very keen to develop the energy sector. ONGC has done a great job in developing the natural gas resources in Tripura to mine out energy for this power project, which will result in the economic growth of the north-east as well as India, catalyzing employment to the local youth."

Thanking the Bangladesh government for the help in logistics of the heavy machinery for the power plant, Mr. Modi said that this project has a strong message to SAARC nations on how regional cooperation can result in regional development. "Similarly, the states should also work in unison for collective gains. The north-eastern India may emerge as a major beneficiary of the talks for an Economic Corridor till Myanmar," he shared. Advisor to the Bangladesh Prime Minister Mr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury was present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chowdhury said it's a great honor to be present on this significant occasion. Citing the development as a major boost in regional energy equations, Mr. Chowdhury said that Bangladesh is keen to join the TAPI pipeline project also, as it is a big market for gas.

"The vision of former ONGC CMD Mr. Subir Raha had led to the conceptualization of this Gas-to-Wire project." He thanked ONGC for the development of the natural gas resources of the north-eastern state for the benefit of the masses. On behalf of the people of Tripura, Mr. Sarkar thanked Bangladesh for the logistics support for the construction of the power plant and requested the visiting PM Advisor Mr. Tawfiq Chowdhury to take up the matter with Bangladesh government, for opening up trade facilities on similar lines through the Ashuganj and Chittagong ports. The Union Minister of State, Petroleum & Natural Gas Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan said that the significance of the ONGC Tripura Power Plant extends beyond Tripura, beyond the north-east, even beyond India. "This Project is an important step in regional cooperation".
