ONGCian G Sathiyan beats nine-time champion to clinch maiden national title
ONGCian G Sathiyan has been crowned as the National Champion in the 82nd National Table Tennis Championship in Men’s Single event at Tau Devi Lal Indoor Stadium in Punchkula. Mr Sathiyan defeated nine-time champion Sharath Kamal in a closely contested final to grab the title.

In the thrilling marquee clash at the tournament, Mr Sathiyan secured a convincing 4-2 win scoring 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8 in the finals. The Table Tennis player’s victory was the result of his hard work and perseverance – which paid off in his fourth final of the National Championship.
G Sathiyan is one of the finest Indian paddler and has the distinction to have attained the World Ranking of 24 in 2019. He is also the only Indian paddler ever to have broken into the World Top-25 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings.
In his debut 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast Australia, he had bagged three medals. He also played a stellar role in the Men’s Team category quarter finals, that helped India secure a maiden bronze medal at the Asian Games 2018 held in Jakarta.
Recently, Mr Sathiyan was conferred with the Chief Minister’s State Sports Award for Outstanding Sportsperson for the year 2011-12 by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. He was among 30 sportspersons felicitated by the Government of Tamil Nadu at Chennai on 8 February 2021. He was also presented with a momentos and cash prize of Rs 1 lakh for his contribution in sports and bringing name and fame to the State of Tamil Nadu.
