About IDWE

Born out of necessity and shaped by decades of operational rigor, the Institute of Drilling & Well Engineering (IDWE) traces its origins to the earliest challenges faced by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in building a skilled drilling workforce. In the absence of formal training systems, early pioneers were trained through hands-on exposure in Assam and advanced learning in Baku, laying the foundation for India's indigenous drilling capability.

This capability was institutionalized in 1978 with the establishment of the Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT) in Dehradun under the leadership of A.K. Mitra. Over time, IDT evolved into a Centre of Excellence, combining applied research, advanced training, and field problem-solving across drilling, fluids, cementing, and completion engineering. Its structured programs—through the Drilling Technology School and Well Control School—became instrumental in developing generations of drilling professionals.

Today, as IDWE, the institute represents a strategic evolution aligned with the increasing complexity of well engineering. The transition in October 2025 expanded its mandate into a fully integrated, multidisciplinary hub covering drilling, completions, and well services. With capabilities spanning real-time operations monitoring, centralized well planning, applied R&D and capability enhancement, IDWE plays a pivotal role in executing complex and high-risk wells.

IDWE's global accreditations, advanced simulators, and recognized research programs reinforce its position as a technical backbone for ONGC's upstream ambitions—continuing a legacy defined by resilience, engineering depth, and continuous evolution.

Vision of IDWE
