ONGC has taken steps to evaluate various forms of energy to fulfil the country’s growing energy needs. Continuing the efforts to improve oil and gas technology scenario in the country, it has established an ONGC Energy Centre Trust (OECT), which is mandated to undertake or assist in programs/ projects of fundamental and applied research for improving and developing commercially viable energy mediums and sources beyond hydrocarbons, especially in clean and/or renewable energy options. ONGC Energy Centre (OEC) has been set-up under the aegis of the OEC Trust to work on various clean energy options.
Future sources of hydrocarbons, given the resource potential in India, are underground coal gasification and methane hydrates. Adding to the already existing extensive portfolio of oil and gas training courses in India ONGC plans to support basic and applied research into these two emerging resource types as part of the R&D focus. It established the Gas Hydrate Research and Technology Centre (GHRTC) at Mumbai. The company has been a forerunner in Gas Hydrates exploration, being an active participant in the formulation and execution of National Gas Hydrate Programmes (NGHP). Entering the domain of Gas hydrates would help it achieve the required energy security for our country in the future.
R&D and Training Institutes by ONGC:
Geodata Processing and Interpretation Centre established in 1987 at ONGC, Dehradun provides solutions to complex E&P problems by integrating seismic with other geoscientific data. Land and marine seismic data of ONGC of Indian & Foreign basins is processed and interpreted synergistically at this centre which has world class state-of-the-art infrastructure backed by specialists.
Since inception, GEOPIC transformed itself into a Centre for Excellence and today is one of the premier institutes of ONGC.
The Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT) was set up in 1978 at Dehradun. Over the years, the Institute has emerged as a premier R&D centre in South East Asia. Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT) provides its techno-economic expertise & solutions to various field problems faced by various services of ONGC with the ultimate objective to promote cost effective E&P activities of the company.
The Institute of Engineering and Ocean Technology (IEOT) was founded in 1983 for innovation, development and acceleration of the future plans of ONGC to achieve self- reliance in technology. The Institute has developed expertise in core fields of Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Risk & Reliability Engineering, Materials & Corrosion Engineering and Alternate Energy section was set up in 2012.
The Institute of Oil & Gas Production Technology (IOGPT) was established in 1984 with assistance from United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) to meet the production and processing related technological requirement of Oil and Gas fields and processing plants. The institute is located at the Technology Park in Panvel, Navi Mumbai.
IOGPT is the first Institute in the country to provide an integrated R&D support to the entire spectrum of Oil and Gas production, which begins at the well bore and culminates at the consumer point.
The Institute of Petroleum Safety, Health and Environment Management (IPSHEM) was set by ONGC in Goa in the year 1989 for promoting safety, occupational health and environment practices and standards in Petroleum sector. It started functioning from its own campus at Betul village in South Goa since 1997.
Institute of Reservoir Studies (IRS), set up in May 1978 in Ahmedabad, is the nodal agency for formulating the development schemes of oil and gas fields of ONGC. The emphasis is on Integrated Reservoir Management combining seismic, geological, well logging, reservoir and production data.
Over the years the institute has been able to build up a team of geo-scientists of various disciplines having a blend of field practices, theory and laboratory experience. Multi-disciplinary approach for carrying out integrated studies has been adopted under one roof to network multi-disciplinary knowledge, skill, information and technology for achieving the desired objective.
Keshava Deva Malaviya Institute of Petroleum Exploration (KDMIPE) is located in picturesque valley of Dehradun in the state of Uttrakhand. It was founded in 1962 with an objective to provide geo-scientific back up to the exploratory efforts of India's National oil company, ONGC.
KDMIPE has been an ISO: 9001:2000 certified institute from 3 December 2004 to 03 December 2007. To achieve the highest standard of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment, KDMIPE has strived to get QHSE certificate and the same was awarded to KDMIPE on 13 June 2008.
The Academy is committed to fostering excellence through enhancement of knowledge, skills and attitudes. An ISO-9001-2008 certified Institute with a global presence, the Academy emphasizes inculcation of technical, managerial and soft skills through quality training, qualification up gradation programmes, accreditation courses all conducted through world renowned faculties & institutes –both from in-house as well as outside.
The growth of an ONGCian to an Exponent of energy business is facilitated by the ONGC Academy, Regional Training Institutes (RTIs) and other ONGC Institutes, and also their tie-ups with globally recognized trainers.
ONGC has established four Regional Training Institutes (RTIs) to focus on the Training & Development needs of its employees across the sectors. The RTIs located at Chennai, Mumbai, Sivasagar and Vadodara are the nodal agencies in their respective sectors for knowledge up-gradation and skill development of employees, through regular multidisciplinary training programs for ONGC executives and non-executives.
Established in November 2003, in the historic, culturally rich and highly industrialised city of Vadodara ,SMP is the flagship of Technical Services. The institute was established as a 'Single Window' with the aim to provide comprehensive technical development of Maintenance Engineers and therefore the focus of trainings are the Field Engineers who operate and maintain the Oil Field Equipment.
The Centre for Excellence in Well Logging Technology (CEWELL) came into existence on 2nd February 2006 with the vision to provide integrated solutions to exploration & production. The centre has its own R&D centre in the area of Petrophysics and is strategically located in Vadodara which has close proximity & access to one of the widely explored, developed & studied basins of ONGC.
CEWELL is an applied R&D center in the area of quality log data processing, interpretation, assimilation, and dissemination of knowledge in the well logging related discipline. It acts as the nodal point for state-of-art data center and repository of logging data acquisition in ONGC.
The Institute of Biotechnology and Geo-tectonic Studies (INBIGS) was founded in 1989 at Jorhat, Assam, in the green surroundings of North-Eastern part of India is functioning as a full-fledged entity with the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 certification and is engaged in the innovative research of petroleum biotechnology through a talented and dedicated team of scientists.
