Introduction

Training and development are one of the key HR functions. The turn of the century has seen increased focus on the same in organizations globally. ONGC Academy is an ISO 9001-2015 certified institute, and the nodal agency of ONGC for imparting training to its executives The academy has meticulously designed a spectrum of training courses for different hierarchical levels and disciplines, technical as well as managerial relevant to the upstream petroleum industry and is committed to excellence in the cause of human resource development. Human resource development initiative of ONGC Academy is guided by the Vedic mantra ‘’ आ नो भद्रा: क्रत्वो यन्तु विशित: ‘Let noble thoughts come to us from all sides.

ONGC has branded the spectrum of its training activities as ‘EXPONENT’- a comprehensive programme which is nurturing the energy leaders of tomorrow in the areas of exploration, engineering and technology. The growth of an ONGCian to an Exponent of energy business is facilitated by the well thought architecture of ONGC Academy, Skill Development Centres (SDCs) and other ONGC institutes. Tie-ups with globally recognized trainers are also significant enablers.

In pursuance of the above, attempts have been made to organize training programs with best in-class faculties through in-house experts, premier Indian academic institutions and global domain experts. The trainings are planned to keep in view the existing and futuristic requirements of business which change frequently in the oil industry. Thus, every year while designing the training calendar for the next year an extensive Training Needs Identification exercise is conducted with work centres to identify the contemporary training needs of the employees.

Our focus is to provide high quality training for everyone at every level: from Joining till superannuation. ONGC Academy has organized 235 numbers of training programs with focus on developing skills in line functions as well as managerial domain during the year 2022-23.

Highlights of FY 2023-24

Following are the achievements/ performance highlights of ONGC Academy during the financial year 2023-24:

  • A total of 152 programs were conducted resulting in training of 5606 executives and creation of 31585 training man days.
  • Post COVID, a record of 650 Graduate Trainees in 5 batches have undergone Induction Training program at ONGC Academy in contact mode. One of the several initiatives undertaken during 2023-24 were interactions with Directors and various Senior Key Executives with the Graduate Trainees.
  • 2308 executives were trained in 79 Management Programs during 2023-24. For developing critical mass of leaders through a system of career planning & development, 2 (Two) Senior Management Programs were organized through IIM Indore with Overseas Learning Component. In this series, 6 (Six) ONGC Young Leaders Programs for E4-E5 Mid-level executives through IIM, Indore and 8 (Eight) Future Energy Leaders Programs for E1-E3 Junior level executives through ASCI, Hyderabad were organized.
  • 44 Function Training Programs were organized during last financial year with the participation of 1563 executives. These also comprise of programs in new business areas in association with institutions of eminence like Renewable Energy Technologies and Strategies, Solar Photovoltaics: Technologies, Manufacturing and Deployment, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS): Fundamentals and Applications etc. 
  • 14 Infocom Programs were organized with the participation of 491 executives. These programs comprise of Cloud Computing, VMWARE, and Certified Information Security Manager, IT Security in Present Scenario etc.
  • 10 Offshore Emergency Management Programs were organized. The course aimed at preparing offshore going personnel for facing the emergency situations. The program is unique in a manner that pedagogy involves simulation of offshore emergency scenarios and shaping the participants to deal with those situations in an ideal manner. Faculty to deliver the program in an experiential manner comprise of offshore veterans in the areas of production and drilling installations.
  • Learning Management System: ONGC Academy has on-boarded Learning Management Software of Ministry of IT and National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) initiated by seven Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, with the objective of enhancing knowledge and skills of executives through this specific learning process. Various components of the system have been successfully tested and rolled out.
    • 1 Contributory Micro-learning content titled “Introduction to Hydro-fracturing” was launched in March 2024 (32 participants with 11 having completed till date).         
    • 2 additional micro-learning courses have been launched.
