Mr P K Rao, the newly appointed Director (Operations), ONGC Videsh

Pasala Krishna Rao has taken over as the Director (Operations) of India’s second most valuable E&P enterprise, ONGC Videsh. Mr. Rao, 55 years takes over the reins of Director (Operations) with effect from today subsequent to the superannuation of Mr. Shyamal Bhattarcharya. Mr Rao brings with him a treasure of experience in various facets of the oil industry specifically in terms of Production, Drilling and Human Resource Management.

A BE and ME (Mechanical) from A.U college of Engineering, Vishakhapatnam and MBA (Marketing) from IGNOU, he joined ONGC as an Assistant Executive Engineer (Graduate Trainee) in 1982. Starting his career as a Shift In-charge at Rajahmundry, he paved his way to success and further elevation in the organisation with his consistent efforts, operational acumen and his knowledge and understanding of the E&P business.

From 1982 till date, in a career span of 33 years Mr Rao worked in various capacities and spent a substantial period of his career in Assam and more than two decades in field operations in Rajahmundry. In all the positions that he held, he discharged his duties with utmost perfection both technically and managerially.

A field person by heart, Mr Rao led the most valuable Onshore Asset of ONGC – Rajahmundry, bringing a turnaround in Drilling, Production and Safety while retaining the position of the best performing Onshore Asset. Under his leadership, Rajahmundry Asset has been conferred with the OISD Award for ‘Best Overall Safety Performance of Oil and Gas Onshore Assets’ and ‘Most consistent Safety Performer Award’. Mr Rao in his illustrious career spread over a period of three decades has been the recipient of National Mines Safety (DGMS) Award from the Honourable President of India (2008 and 2013). He is also the recipient of the Young Executive of the Year (1990) and Manager of the Year (2007) award in ONGC.

Prior to taking over as Asset Manager of Rajahmundry he worked in various capacities especially in KG Offshore (Shallow and Deep Offshore Field of Eastern Offshore).

As Director (Operations) he will be responsible for development and production operations of 35 Overseas Assets in 16 Countries. His job would primarily entail Project management, Technical management of Field Services, overseeing of Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs), Joint Operating Agreements, Marketing and Risk Management as well.

In addition, Mr Rao will also be responsible for HR, Legal, MM, IT and Security functions of ONGC Videsh. At a time when ONGC Videsh is poised to grow at a significant rate to achieve the stiff Perspective Plan 2030 targets, Mr Rao will play a pivotal role in increasing production from existing Assets, manpower development and strengthening of support functions.
