Maharatna ONGC has extended a financial assistance of Rs 5 crore towards construction of the ground floor of the Vashishtayam residential-cum-day care center for children with special needs and disabilities.  The proposed center, at Vatsalya Gram of Vrindavan at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, under its first phase, will cater to the needs of over 500 differently-abled children – residential (250) and day boarders (250) – while continuing to offer day-care services.

The residential-cum-day care center will be built at the 52-acre Vatsalya Gram campus at Vrindhavan in Mathura and the infrastructure facilities will be developed keeping in mind the needs of the differently-abled children and thus will be barrier-free. A dedicated Naturopathy and Ayurvedic Therapy Block will also be created to offer a holistic healthcare package to the beneficiaries.

The Center will have a disability ramp (for wheel-chair users) for all floors as per applicable guidelines, toilets will have bigger doors and cabins for wheel-chair users, wash-basins will be provided on low height and a fully-maintained landscape area will be available for outdoor activities of the children. The building will be fully equipped with fire-fighting system as per NBC norms. Optimum level of safety of children will be ensured with CCTV surveillance.

The facilities to be made available on the Ground floor – funded by ONGC – include reception, Principal Office, Counselor Room, , Disability Ramp,  Lawn, Linen Room, Warden Room, Trainer Room, Dining Area, Kitchen, Pantry, Naturopathy & Ayurvedic Therapy Section, Occupational Therapy Room, Sports Room, Vocational Center, Staff Room, Physiotherapy Room, Speech Therapy Room, Pre-Vocational Class-room, Resource Room, Early Intervention Class-room, Pre-Primary Class-room, Secondary Classroom, Music  Room, two visitors’ waiting areas, two toilet blocks, three Stores / Medical Rooms and five classrooms.

The implementing agency of the residential-cum-day care center for differently-abled children is the Param Shakti Peeth – a Society which has been working towards mainstreaming marginalized members of the society, especially women and children.

The agency has placed a cradle/palna at the entrance of Vatsalya Gram complex, where orphaned, disabled children are abandoned and the agency then provides end-to-end care to these children and other widows in Vrindavan by offering free shelter, healthcare, education, vocational training and other life sustaining activities.

As on date, 150 special children, along with 163 children [125 girls & 38 boys], are being supported at Vatsalya Gram. The Vaishtayam Center, with 150 students, is currently running out of the Primary School premises and the students are being accommodated there during night as a short term measure until the Vashishtayam building is completed. The program has been recognized by Golden book of World Records with certificate of Excellence for the World Record of managing orphan rehabilitation center through a unique family-based model.
