ONGC CMD and All India Public Sector Sports Control Board (AIPSSCB) President Subhash Kumar announced that a T-20 cricket tournament, supported by ONGC, will be organized in Gurugram during 20 - 24 December 2021 to revive sporting activities affected by COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement was made during a press conference on 15 December 2021. Mr Kumar said it is in ONGC’s ethos to promote sports and added that CPSEs play a significant role in promoting sports in India.

Speaking on the occasion, the CMD said that sports teaches how to lead a disciplined life and how to appreciate your competitors. “That is something unique in sports. We need to promote sports as a way of life to support a bigger social cause,” he said. Highlighting the contribution of CPSEs in sports, Mr Kumar noted that 15 sportspersons from member organizations represented the nation in the recent Tokyo Olympics -- seven from ONGC, seven from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and one from Food Corporation of India. He noted that these players also included seven, who were part of the Bronze medal winning Indian Hockey team -- three from ONGC, three from IOCL and 1 from FCI. Mr Kumar also cautioned that this cause needs to be undertaken while keeping in mind the COVID-19 safety protocols.
The trophy to be given away in the tournament was also displayed at the press briefing, which was attended by AIPSSCB Vice President (ED-ONGC) HSP Singh, General Secretary (General Manager-AAI) Gian Batra and international/IPL cricketers Amit Mishra, Parveen Kumar, Sarandeep Singh and Amit Bhandari.

The matches will be played on league-cum-knock out basis at two grounds namely -- Backyard Sports Club and Dome Cricket Ground – at Sector 59 in Gurgaon (Haryana). As many as 12 teams from different member PSUs will participate in the tournament. This tournament attracts participation of leading players of the country employed by the various member organizations /promoted under their scholarship/contract schemes. It also gives much-needed exposure to upcoming cricketers associated with member PSUs via employment/ scholarship / contract by providing them a platform to showcase their talent while playing with national and international players.

The cricket tournament will be followed by Carom organized by LIC at Jaipur, Badminton by HPCL at Bangalore, Table Tennis by ONGC and Volleyball by Coal India. The decision to hold these games was taken during the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board held on 7 December 2021.
The Board, through its member organizations, has made phenomenal contributions towards the promotion of sports in the country. The contribution of AIPSSCB and its member organizations have been recently illustrated when nine officers of ONGC and IOCL were conferred with the Arjuna and Dhyanchand Awards for 2021.
