The Institute of Engineering and Ocean Technology (IEOT) was founded in 1983 for innovation, development and acceleration of the future plans of ONGC to achieve self- reliance in technology. The Institute has developed expertise in core fields of Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Risk & Reliability Engineering, Materials & Corrosion Engineering and Alternate Energy section was set up in 2012.

Highlights (2020-21):

1. Significant Projects:

High impact projects of IEOT during 2020-21 are given below:

  • IEOT carried out 28 Life extension & Structural Integrity Assessment projects, 16 Geotechnical studies, 20 Material & Corrosion studies and 35 Risk & Reliability Engineering studies [Hazard & Operability (HAZOP), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) & other Safety studies.
  • IEOT completed Detector Optimization study for Unmanned Wellhead Platforms of Mumbai High Asset and established that H2S detectors are not required when H2S concentration in well fluid / lift gas is below 300 PPM.
  • Open Path/ Line of Sight Infra-Red Gas Detectors were identified by IEOT as most suitable type of detectors for gas leak in Process Gas Compressor cooler areas of Offshore Platforms based on gas dispersion analysis study.
  • IEOT completed two commercial projects, one for OVL on Field Development Plan including technical review of proposed process platform for Phase 3 Development of A1-A3 Offshore Blocks of Myanmar and second one for M/S Arch Software Private Limited (ASPL) on Structural Integrity Assessment (SIA) of a well platform.

2. Technologies upgraded/ inducted:

  • IEOT applied a new method for computation of axial capacity of offshore piles, developed as a result of IEOT’s participation in an international Joint Industry Project (JIP), using CPT results, for ICG platform.
  • Materials & Corrosion (M&C) Engineering section has developed an in-house software, capable of calculating the following parameters:
    • Liquid, gas and Mean velocity
    • Erosion velocity and Prediction
    • Flow regime
    • Partial Pressure of CO2, H2S and base upon it the type of corrosion mechanism.
    • Corrosion Risk Assessment. Benefit: Earlier all these parameters were calculated using separate software / manually using excel sheets.
  • M&C Section developed use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in addition to the existing potentio dynamic method to study the corrosivity of a solution.
